Kota Eberhardt Instagram – 1,362 meters above sea level Jalapa is surrounded by the Jumay volcano, about a 2 hour drive from Guatemala City, or simply Guaté to the locals. A year ago, a company came in searching for valuable minerals in the mountain surrounding the city, prepared to destroy it. Enraged, the people who occupied the mountain broke their machines overnight, forcing the foreigners out. Many of the mountain people descended into the city when the company returned. They are still weary of outsiders like myself.
