After an amazing inaugural #TIFFxInstagram Shorts Festival, we are very excited to announce our Judge’s Choice Award winner: @ivanherrera’s LA PASIÓN ORIGINAL, a gripping and surreal portrait of a man’s journey to the other side. The short was filmed in one of the most underground slums of the Dominican Republic and features rapper @originaljuan80 in the lead role. “It is very common to our culture here in the slums of Dominican Republic, to say goodbye and farewell with music, gun shots to the air, rum and weed. Especially for the rappers, Gs or just the boss of the block,” Ivan said. Judge Ava Duvernay (@directher) called the film “exhilarating”, @jamesfrancotv said it had “great character and tone”, @nabildo pointed to it’s “great use of abstract symbolism,” and @rachelryle summarized, “LA PASION ORIGINAL’s story is rich and the footage is so visually satisfying and full of life.
