On this day in 1972, my little daughter, Michele, died in the early hours of the morning. Feels like yesterday. I awoke in the hospital room to the clamor of nurses and a doctor trying to revive her; in a daze I walked straight into the wall as if I go thru it, and then realizing I couldn’t, turned around, flustered, frantic. The head doctor rushed in. On and on it went until he finally said: “We’re kidding ourselves. She’s not coming back.” And there she lay, my innocent little Michele, bald from chemo, her round face angelic, looking like the dead so often look, removed from it all — blameless, abandoned, troubled no more by the pain & the struggle, giving no glimpse of what that “undiscovered country” might be revealing to them. And it takes so many years — long years — to realize they are not coming back; and they are never really going away; they will be with us in grief & pain and memories of intimacy & joy forever.
