Kali Hawk Instagram – 😎When I was a freshman in #college a friend gave me a copy of Goodfellas. 👀I became #obsessed with it. I literally watched it every day for an entire semester 💃🏽then I dropped out and became and #actor 🎬✨ 🤓From an early age I’d been a fan of #mafia movies, but it’s only recently that I started to ask myself why. 🤷🏽♀️Maybe it was the clothes, since everyone in these movies was pretty well-dressed 🎩for a bunch of criminals lol 🤔The more I think about it tho, I think I fell in #love with the feeling of #community presented in these films. In addition to the fact that Organized #Crime demands a #focus on working together, the movies always had a love #story 💓and a #family story. 😯There was even a sense of community amongst the cast, as a lot of these movies used the same #actors again and again.
#MartinScorsese created #stars out of his actors by giving them a world 🌎 then inviting the audience to love them in new and #exciting ways with each film. 🙎🏾♂️Spike Lee created stars similarly by establishing a community on screen you could follow from movie to movie. 👨🏼🏫Woody Allen did too. 🕺🏽In #Hollywood it’s often said that the days of #moviestars being the reason people go see a movie is long gone (🙄or that there are no new movie stars) but is that due to the lack of strong actor/director communities? Other than big #SuperHero movies 👩🏼🎤or franchise films, what new movies have given us the chance to fall in love with an actor enough to become a loyal fan?
#SpikeLee gave us the #opportunity to fall in love with #Denzel 👨🏾by making him the lead in multiple movies. #DeNiro and even #DiCaprio 👦🏼were able to build a similar thing with Scorsese. People turn out for their movies because we had the chance to love them in quality films that endeared them to us (along w/ a whole lot of other great talent). 👶🏽As a kid, I remember hearing adults saying 🗣movies like #Goodfellas glamorized #violence but they also kinda humanized it. 💁🏽As a #NewYorker tho, I loved that through these movies I could see different parts of my #city that I didn’t know. 😏Maybe #NewYork is the reason those directors are so good! | Posted on 06/Jun/2017 12:44:10
