I met her in the Himalayan National Park, the forrest ranger told us that everyone calls her βNaniβ. Sheβs in her 80βs and lives alone in the wilderness, when asked why? she would reply with pride that this is my home.
This is the place where she got married, had kids, spent almost all her life. And then her husband passed away, three of her kids died in this very land in front of her. One daughter fell in river which flows next to her fields, one more ambushed by bears. After the husband’s death, slowly her kids moved on to the lowlands to find a livelihood. With a sigh in her heart, remebering of her kids, she strengthens her voice and says βPar dukh nai koi(but no remorse)’. She ploughs her fields, grows her vegetables, safegaurds her produce from wild animals, repairs her house all by herself. She is a woman with a strong resolve and has experienced life with her naked eyes and bare hands.
Her kids want her to move to the town with them, so that they can provide for her. But she is the mother of the house, so what if the house has none living, atleast it has the memories of her family and how can she ever abandon that. She would not, many a battles she has won so far with the forrest department, with her old age, but she is holding her ground and standing strong even in her 80βs.

You would have seen rainbows, would have seen them in daylight up in the sky or in the waterfalls’s splashes.Β
But high on mountains where the sky is crystal clear and some snow flakes are flying in the air, moon rainbows are formed.
My camera couldn’t capture what my eyes saw, just a memoir of that sight is all I have now.
