Lirije is a stateless Roma – even though she was born in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, she does not have citizenship papers. .
The Romani people have a unique ethnic identity and speak the Romani language, which distinguishes them from the majority Macedonian-speaking population. Official numbers indicate that there are 54,000 Roma in the country, although unofficial estimates range
from 110,000 to 260,000. .
We are working with the the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia government and communities like Lirije’s to help them say #ibelong.

Across the world today, more than ten million people are told they don’t belong ANYWHERE. They are called ‘stateless’. They are denied a nationality. And with it, they are denied their basic rights. Statelessness can mean a life without education, without medical care, or legal employment. It can mean a life without the ability to move freely, without prospects, or hope. Statelessness is inhumane.

Everyone should be able to say ‘IBelong’. This week marks the third anniversary of UNHCR’s I Belong campaign to End Statelessness. On Friday November 3rd, we launched a new report:“This is Our Home”: Stateless Minorities and their Search for Citizenship. Google “ibelong” to learn more.
