Megalyn Echikunwoke Instagram – This is Kilonito Primary school where the enrollment is nearly half girls and rising. FGM has deep roots in the maasai culture as they have practiced it for centuries. It is meant to prepare a girl for marriage but It results in child marriage, teen pregnancy and of course, no more education for her. Its health risks are many and can be fatal. @amrefhealthafrica’s “yes I do” project proposes alternatives to the community that would still encourage the celebration of womanhood but allow a girl to continue her education and get training in reproductive health and family planning where instead of getting a dowry you get an educated women who can add real value to her family and community.
