Donisha Rita Claire Prendergast Instagram – Reminder to Self: Tamir Rice was 12 years old when someone called 911 and accused the child of playing with a loaded weapon and pointing it at people on a playground. Officers responded to the call and within seconds of arriving on the scene, they fired 2 bullets into the baby. He lived long enough to know why he died. He was a black body playing with a toy gun manufactured in the US that didn’t have an orange tip to identify it as a toy. That was enough to make him guilty and not innocent. They didn’t see a child, he didn’t have a chance. Neither the caller, the 911 respondent, the police, nor the corporate manufacturers faced any legal consequences. When will we be brave enough to enforce Right over these irredeemable wrongs? The loss of a life is too much for too little. Settlement agreements can not be enough. Police do not serve and protect with the protocol presently in place. There is no room to de-escalate. Fear of the ‘other’ instigates immediate consequences that put our lives at stake. It could have been me, or my brothers, or my mother, or my father, or my grandmother, or my uncles, my aunts, my cousins, my niece, my nephew. It is happening to all of us. It’s an epidemic. There is no time to wait. Accusers must be held accountable at every level. Protocol must be revised. Legislation must reflect the times we live in. For the sake of our children.
