Lorraine Nicholson Instagram – To quote my brilliant friend @yeshidid @data4blacklives : I open Instagram and I see and feel a pressure to put on our best faces, post our best photos, to maintain a facade of prosperity and glamor and humor that is an illusion. While we don’t yet have the data to better understand the role of social media in the increasing suicide rate, it is so clear to me that this facade is hurting every single one of us. Instagram simply reflects the culture we live in.
Yesterday the CDC released data that that the suicide rate in this country has increased exponentially. And the reasons go beyond mental health – housing, employment, relationship problems, are driving people who have never diagnosed or even experienced mental health issues to take their life.
We come on here and are almost required to ignore the profound suffering and that is plaguing our lives and the lives of people all around us. We have to live in truth, to be honest about the sorrow of every day life, because our lives and the lives of people depend on it. That is when we find joy and healing. Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, and the hundreds of thousands of people who have taken their lives in this country, I pray they rest in power.
