My first “mirror-selfie”. Circa 1973. Age 15. Honeywell-Pentax SP500, 55mm SMC-Takumar lens, bought with money earned from walking other people’s dogs. An SLR with removable lens allowed the camera body, with adapters, to swap with a telescope eyepiece, for taking pictures of the universe. And yes, that Afro was in style back then.
A color photo with no color in it — just shades of sepia. My living room suspension lamp designed by Artemide, for which the light source may be more intriguing than whatever it’s trying to illuminate. For me, the interplay of light and shade evokes close-up @NASA images of Saturn’s ring system, casting shadows on Saturn itself.

For my first Instagram post I offer my first photo (perhaps the first-ever) of #Manhattanhenge. Sunset on 34th Street, Park Avenue. July 11, 2001. 8:17pm ET
As an astrophysicist, I know how and why the Sun generates energy in its core. But I nontheless well-up at the sight of a majestic sunset, which brings out the poet in us all. (“Twelve Apostles” rock formation. The Great Oean Road, Australia. August 2015)
If I were Cuban, and if I smoked Cohiba Cigars, and if I knew how to write music, and if I composed pensive songs about life in the Caribbean, then this would be my Album Cover.
The stark beauty of Yellowstone Park, atop a dormant supervolcano. Reminder that not all of our planet is a haven for life. Across many parts of Earth’s surface, “Mother Nature” will just as soon see you dead. (August 2017)
After discussing with my banana how small and insignificant we all are in the universe, it turned sad.
Jet Engine Car. Rode it down a 3-mile runway with Jay for @jaylenosgarage. Driver-side window blew out at 130 mph. We hit 165. Could have gone 200+, but Jay said he didn’t want to be the guy who killed Neil deGrasse Tyson. [Edwards Air Force Base, California. May 2016]
Fractal Food. If math-fluent Space Aliens coveted anything we eat, it would surely be #Romanesco Broccoli, which looks not of this Earth. The large-scale spiral pattern repeats at intermediate as well as small scales. A tell-tale feature of #fractals. A tray of it appeared in the bar scene of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Evidence of its popularity, even in galaxies far, far away . (Summer 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska)
For most of our life on Earth we either resist or succumb to the force of gravity. At Muscle Beach, gravity loses every time. (Venice, California – Sept 2016)
Crowds gather. Traffic halts. Cross streets glisten with fiery orange light, rendering otherwise-shadowed urban canyons aglow. Behold sunset on the Manhattan grid. Behold #Manhattanhenge.
In case you ever wondered, this is what fully decapitated broccoli looks like.
Not enough of us pause to reflect on the vitality of #plants that require no more than a crack in the pavement to thrive.
In large but enclosed volumes, Humans resemble Ants as we move through them. Or is it the Ants who look Human, as they move through their own architectural spaces. World Trade Center Occulus, New York City. December 2015.
Flash photo at a water spray, amid bushes and the glare of a low, setting Sun. The effect, to me, evokes a late 19th century impressionist painting. [World Financial Center plaza, New York City. June 2001.]
Yes, my room was at the end of this semi-infinite corridor at a hotel in Nashville. Intrigued by any #vanishingpoint ever since I learned to draw them in High School mechanical drawing class.
A square spiral. Also, a reminder of why somebody invented Elevators. Pilgrim Monument, Provincetown, Massachusetts. August 2001.
Street Memorial at Anthony Bourdain’s shuttered Les Halles Restaurant. Park Avenue South, New York City. June 18, 2018
Restaurant off the Plaza de la Catedral, Havana, Cuba. The seemingly exaggerated perspective with mixture of vibrant colors and muted stone evokes for me many Renaissance paintings of archway-lined plazas.
I will never tire of the New York City skyline in twilight. Empire State Building. Chrysler Building. United Nations. Photographed across the East River from a dock at Long Island City, Queens. October 2003.
A #Puffin in profile, posing as if they know in advance they’re more photogenic that way. Seward, Alaska. August 2008.
At higher latitudes (north or south) #twilight lasts vastly longer than in the tropics – affording ample opportunities for photos such as this. Lake shoreline. Dusk, New Hampshire. June 2016.
We will rue the day that garlic cloves of the world rise up in protest of the slicing and smashing of their brethren. Or not.
