Ashwin Kakumanu Instagram – 25 years ago today my father Sudarshan passed away. I can still remember some memories from that day clearly. Being in school when my mother and relatives came to get permission to take me back home. I had stepped out of class and when I went back I remember my benchmates were being overly nice to me,offering me their stationery to use. My teacher had told them what happened when I stepped out and so they heard before I did. My mother telling me to be brave for the news I was going to hear as soon as I walked out of the school gates. Seeing all the chaos at home & all the many poojais & ceremonies that little kid had to perform after for the next few days & years on Feb 14. His death and absence in my life has pretty much shaped the path I’ve taken. From my views, beliefs, insecurities & struggles, i can draw a line like a flowchart. Hating new school years & meeting new people mainly because they would only ask ‘what does your father do?’ when I replied he died there would be an awkward silence or condolence.They would almost never ask about my mother even though she did so much to earn & provide for us. Watching movies to the point of obsession as an escape from the reality of that time. My father was a movie buff and used to regularly bring home cassettes. My love for Rambo ,star wars, McKenna’s gold, & Batman comes from him introducing it to me. I never knew this but, few years ago someone told me when my father was a young man he wanted to act & be in the movies but my grandfather discouraged him & put a stop to it. I definitely remember my grandfather being very annoyed when I used to run around with my camera making short films, that explains why. So its very ironic that I unknowingly found my way into this field & sort of fulfilled a dream of his even though it was never intentional.There are still days when I meet people who talk fondly of my dad & I find out new things about him as well as sometimes meet people who have an emotional rush when they find out I am their friend Sandy’s son. It’s strange to hear people talk with such clarity about a man I’ve spent so little time with and have a handful of memories of. That’s what today is for- to remember.
