In the conflict & upheaval that forces them to flee their homes, thousands of children lose their parents to violence or are separated & endure long journeys on their own. This #WorldChildrensDay, I am thinking about these girls and all the other young children I met on my trip to Jordan. The children who have been forced to flee. In 2017, an estimated 173,800 unaccompanied & separated child refugees & asylum-seekers were reported worldwide. If you want to help, please consider making a donation to @refugees. Two years ago, I traveled to Jordan to visit the Za’atari and Azraq refugee camps. Each family I sat with detailed their journey, the danger they left behind, the necessity to flee. Each was most thankful that they were safely together, no matter how vastly different their current living situations were to the ones they left back at home. Their love was overwhelmingly strong. Their unity was the greatest importance and it was emphasized constantly. I’ve been thinking about that most of all through current news reports of all that is happening on our soil. It is impossible to stomach the horrors of family separation. It is impossible to stomach the number of displaced individuals. 16.2 million people were newly driven from their homes in 2017. 44,400 every day. One every two seconds. Please join me in remembering and honoring the strength, courage and resilience of millions displaced from their homes. Before the newly opened @forward__space had reached all of its design and buildout glory, there were bare walls, a concrete floor and the promise of dance. My friend, unbelievably talented choreographer @kristinsudeikisdance & I felt compelled to film the first people to move through this space. So, pre demo, we directed this, capturing these angel humans/company members alongside brilliant DP, @Salessi. The power of dance + music is an undeniable thing. At three I told my mom I wanted to dance & there was no looking back. If you’re in NYC, you should take a class alongside these artists. They. Are. Magic. Missing class over here in London… FORWARD-Space
