Devon Aoki Instagram – He was gentle, not at all like people assume. He would hold your hand, ask your opinion, was always curious about what you were wearing, he was generous and would shower you with gifts and laugh at your jokes. Not one bland statement could ever be uttered from his lips. He was lightning quick. Once we became friends, he showed me poetry like works by Alan Seegar and I sent him my own poems by fax. He introduced me to the work of Brancusi and we shot a story where I became a Brancusi sculpture. He communicated by fax and preferred to write hand written letters, beautiful words and drawings on his signature paper. After the show, I ended up traveling to his home in Biarritz to shoot the campaign. It was countryside and we were joined by a horse and a goat that were best friends and roamed the property with us. I saw Karl’s reflection on the glass as we shot the campaign and he made it into one of the photos which I will post once I find it. I will miss him so much—he will always be so special to me….and I am grateful for all the times that I became his bride, that he took my hand on the runway or let me sit at his side during fittings, the times that I stayed at his place in Paris and he would come into to the room after a long day to give me a squeeze.
