Emily Kokal Instagram – This a lil shoutout to my #1
I got this guitar when I was 8 from my uncle. It was his when he was young, I don’t really think he ever played it much..
And I didn’t really pick it up until I was 16 when I started learning chords from my friend Caitlin and my mom’s boyfriend Bert, who also helped me figure out tab from a Beatlemania book. I’ve written most my solo songs and some warpaint jams on this little low action short-necked classical (almost feels like an electric that way, and made finger picking on electric a natural tranzish)
The sticker with the “brand” came off decades ago.. and I’m sure it wasn’t a name any of us know.
I’m really lucky, I have a lot of guitars…really nice and special guitars that have been gifted to me over the years but I always come back to this baby.. it’s how I learned and how I found my own feel. It was too flimsy and weird to just strum chords so I started arpeggiating just to get some vibe and that way has just stuck with me.
I feel understood by it, and I think it feels the same.
It’s almost impossible to mic or play live cuz it’s so quiet but it’s the perfect writing tool and I should probably put a pick up in it so I could rock it out somewhere.
