If you don’t know, make Google your friend☺️) Gladys is one of the greatest singers of any generation! And one of the most under appreciated in my opinion. Some singers can really sing. But, not all singers can move souls! Also, as the story was told to me by another famous person in the business, Gladys was actually the one to bring the Jackson 5 to the attention of Berry Gordy. ![Michael Bearden Instagram – About last night in Vegas. . A Dream come true!! Let me put this in perspective. In the late 50’s and early 60’s, black musicians/artists couldn’t stay in the casinos they were performing in or even walk in through the front door. They had to come in through the kitchen. Quincy Jones (who has amazing stories!) told me once that Frank Sinatra (Quincy was his conductor and arranger) refused to play the places that embraced that policy. He used his power and platform to combat racism directly! Last night, Lady Gaga (the hottest star on the planet right now) reinstated a new brand and era of jazz and elegance to Las Vegas! (To a sold out crowd of 5400 very enthusiastic patrons!) I am her conductor! (I’ve been conducting for many years! But that’s another post) It was a wildly successful evening! She and I had some private reflection after the show and spoke about the significance of what just happened. It was profound. Suffice to say, it is not lost on me, especially as we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. today, of who’s shoulders I’m (we’re) standing on. I am deeply grateful for all the sacrifices that came before me, so that I could do what I did last night. I hope I made the ancestors proud! And, I couldn’t even tell you where the kitchen door is. 😏 M~[p.s. this is Fly Me To The Moon. The chart Quincy arranged and conducted for Sinatra and the Count Basie Orchestra.
