Kota Eberhardt Instagram – ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻In honour of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, I’ve joined the virtual ‘March in March’ to end violence against women. Massive shoutout to the UN for inviting me to share space with my fellow daughters of resistance, midwives to a new world, and leaders committed to ending the vitriolic shameful treatment of women globally. And of course, I came shook like the milkshake of the boys who have underestimated me🍧 thank u @siesmarjan #UNWFPA #iwalk4women

Sooooo if the digital platforms have become our catalysts of change, let’s talk numbers, because being informed is powerful… – 120 million girls worldwide (1 in 10) have experienced forced intercourse or other forced sexual acts at some point in their lives. -200 million women and girls alive today have undergone female genital mutilation (and that’s only 30 countries with data to share) -Women and girls together account for 71% human trafficking victims detected globally -Native Americans alone are almost 3X more likely to experience sexual assault and rape than ANY OTHER ETHNIC GROUP in the United States. 84% of Native American and Alaskan Native women have experienced violence, 56% have experienced sexual violence, and over 90% have experienced violence at the hands of a non-tribal member.

It’s 2018…….Can somebody please explain to me WHY wanting safety for women everywhere makes someone an activist and why these glaring statistics doesn’t translate as a global emergency? The first step towards ending violence is to recognise that the crisis is less a political and technical problem than it is a behavioural and social one. 🕊 | Posted on 16/Mar/2018 21:23:39
