AS IT LAYS 2: YOU BETTER WATCH! @billyidol’s video portrait is now live on YouTube. Link in bio. In 2012, I produced @as_it_lays, an artwork by @alexisrael It was comprised of 33 individual video portraits of iconic figures whom have made significant impact on the cultural history of Los Angeles. In a contemporary update, each portrait took the form of a simple talk-show interview. On an LA-inspired set, he asked each subject a series of unique everyday-life questions (“If you were an animal what would you be?” “Do you believe in love at first sight?) Because the questions were not tailored to the specific subject, the interview tended to reveal a more personal side of the subject than what might have been seen in a standard promotional interview on a morning show or late night network talk show. The objective was the same as traditional portrait-painting: to capture the likeness of the sitter. He sees the work as a group-portrait of the city of Los Angeles, an archive of conversations with the people who have helped to define it. The portraits and set were acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art @moca. Season 1 is available to watch now. A new episode of Season 2 will be uploaded every Wednesday and Friday until all 33 are posted.
