Did you know this ecosystem ALONE provides 20% of the oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere & 10% of all known species? It is vital to ALL life on Earth. Swipe right to find out ways you can help... like reducing your consumption of animal products (most of these fires were initially lit to clear land for cattle) or even go plant-based (but check your soy and almond sources)! And support indigenous communities who are at the forefront of this fight (they’re fighting for ALL of us! See tags below)... (not my words!) Wildfires often occur in the dry season in Brazil, but this year has been worse than normal. Fires are deliberately started in efforts to illegally deforest land for cattle ranching. 72,000 fires have been detected between January and August & more than 9,500 forest fires since Thursday, mostly in the Amazon region. In comparison, there were fewer than 40,000 in the whole of 2018. So the two scariest numbers for understanding the fires are this: There are 80 percent more fires this year than there were last summer, according to the Brazilian government. This surge in burning has accompanied a spike in deforestation. More than 1,330 square miles of the Amazon rainforest have been lost since January, a 39% increase over the same period last year, according to The New York Times. Why are these figures so important? Because Brazil’s political leadership has changed in the past year. On January 1, Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right populist who has openly pined for his country’s authoritarian past, was sworn in as president. During his campaign, he promised to weaken the Amazon’s environmental protections—which have been effective at reducing deforestation for the past two decades—and open up the rainforest to economic development. Ashleigh Cummings Instagram – #earthovershootday already?! This is horrifying and heartbreaking… A few weeks ago, @elleaus asked me what was one thing I was doing to help ensure a sustainable future… the first step is changing my consumption habits (less/zero-waste, reusable everything, secondhand clothes, a micro plastic filter in my laundry, plant-based-organic diets, buying local and bulk etc etc etc…) but I chose to talk about Carbon Offsets because I feel a lot of people haven’t really heard much about them. So swipe on right 👉👉👉 I just want to clarify that it isn’t a get-out-of-environmental-impact-guilt-free card. It really should be used it as a last resort to address what you don’t have control over.
Also – do your research… look for a non-profit and certified organisation. Enquire into practices: eg sometimes tree-planting creates a mono-culture or soil erosion so it must be executed with care!

I would love to hear the ways that you’re contributing towards a more sustainable future (and if you have a carbon offset scheme you believe in!) #Repost @easyecotips

Did you know?
.
Today is Earth Overshoot Day 2019.
.
What does it mean?
.
As of 29th July 2019, the World has already consumed all the natural resources that the Earth can produce in a year. (Water, oil, clean air, etc.)
.
This means that we are now living on credit until the end of the year, spending natural resources much faster than the Earth can produce them.
.
This date is a global date. Swipe and take a look at your Country’s overshoot day. As you will see, all countries are far from equal!
.
Now tag your friends and try to calculate your personal overshoot day with the link in our story, and comment below to let us know how well (or bad) you are doing. 😉
