Amanda Jolly Instagram – In case you didn’t see me screaming in my stories today, I got nominated for an Annie Award in character design this morning. It’s for work I’ve done on our beloved Tangled show, and that really puts a bow on everything for me. .

However, I wanted to make a post about this, not only to save the memory somewhere, but because I wanted to talk about awards and why I’m excited. So, the longer you’re in the entertainment industry, the more jaded you become on awards. It has a lot to do with understanding the voting system for nominees, sometimes understanding how nominees got into the pool in the first place, etc. The short and short of it is: you stop looking at wins as meaning “the best”. There are too many people and projects who get overlooked, and too much hard work all over the industry to believe an award is gonna decide that. I really feel this way. .

All of that SAID, for a girl who wanted to work in animation her whole life, who only mustered the courage to try 8 years ago, and who has only been in the industry doing this thing she loves for 5.5 years, this means a lot to me. A lot. It has everything to do with feeling part of a community that I spent decades thinking I couldn’t break into. It feels humbling and exciting to know that the piece I’m playing in it, designing characters, is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. I’ve been really fortunate with opportunities to pursue this dream and with the people backing me each step of the way. Awards and nominations aren’t the be all and end all. But this nomination (truly, even being in the consideration pool for a nom) was the sweetest little gift, and I’m gonna fold it up and tuck it tight and keep it warm in my arms.
