Fola Evans-Akingbola Instagram – When I was little I had a collage on my bedroom door. The door was covered in beautiful images ripped from the pages of top magazines like Vogue. I loved my collage and I loved the faces of the women I had chosen to glue to my door.
One day, my mother lovingly mentioned to me that my collage, which covered the entire door, featured no faces that looked like mine. No mixed-race faces, in fact, no shades of brown or black faces at all.
In that moment I realized the power of imagery. The power of the images we are feeding ourselves & the next generation. Magazines are one of the many vehicles we have in our society for delivering powerful, influential images. For many years I would flick through these pages & hardly ever see the array of beauty I see when I go out into the world.
We cannot underestimate the subtle impact it has on a person’s sense of self- worth rarely seeing themselves or the range of humanity reflected back to them from mainstream society.

So, here’s to @edward_enninful – who in his first year of becoming Editor in Chief @britishvogue has already made a commitment, not just with words, but with actual action, to change & to a future we can all be a part of.
In the magazine’s 102 year history @badgalriri is the 1st black woman to be on the all important September issue cover.
