Meet the 100th Lung Transplant Recipient

It’s @tommylipnick’s birthday. Well, his first birthday. Tommy was born at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on January 10. On December 1, 2019, he had his second chance at life. Tommy became the 100th person to receive a #LungTransplant at Northwestern Medicine.

“I woke up and could breathe again. It’s unbelievable,” he says.
•
Eight years ago, persistent cold symptoms lead to a life-changing diagnosis. Tommy had #HypersensitivityPneumonitis, a rare disease where foreign particles like dust, fungus, molds or chemicals trigger an immune response in the lungs, causing inflammation and hindering #lung function. He had good days and bad days for years until the good days seemed to be behind him.

Tommy is a #musician, #producer, engineer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. While on a European tour with @smashingpumpkins, he was admitted to a hospital. When he came back to #Chicago, his health started to rapidly decline.

“His only option for survival was a double lung transplant,” says Northwestern Medicine Thoracic Surgeon Ankit Bharat, MD. Tommy was added to the lung transplant waiting list. He had a match less than 48 hours later.

“Now I have two birthdays to celebrate: January 10, the day I was born; and December 1, the day I received my new #lungs at #NorthwesternMedicine,” says Tommy.
