Their bodies and labor were the capital that fueled the country’s founding and wealth. But many also had money. Enslaved people actively participated in the informal and formal market economy. They saved money earned from overwork, from hiring themselves out, and through independent economic activities with banks, local merchants, and their enslavers. Elizabeth Keckley, a skilled seamstress whose dresses for Abraham Lincoln’s wife are displayed in Smithsonian museums, supported her enslaver’s entire family and still earned enough to pay for her freedom. Free and enslaved market women dominated local marketplaces, including in Savannah and Charleston, controlling networks that crisscrossed the countryside. They ensured fresh supplies of fruits, vegetables, and eggs for the markets, as well as a steady flow of cash to enslaved people. Whites described these women as “loose” and “disorderly” to criticize their actions as unacceptable behavior for women, but white people of all classes depended on them for survival. _______________________________ Shout out to vox.com for the write-up. Sonequa Martin-Green Instagram – Oh my goodness my family…my friends…they made my birthday one of the best I’ve ever had. Sigh. I know how big of a blessing that is, all the more considering the times we’re in. I was able to experience everything that’s most important all in one day. And I thank all of you who gave me love from afar, via phone, email and social media. My gratitude might just consume me. ♥️ _________________________ Special thanks to Yeshua, my Mama for the fierce art of birthing me, my husband for using such love and creativity to put together the best gift he’s ever given me, my son for his uplifting excitement, my sister, family members, best friends, and inner circle of queens and kings for affirming me with their words, going out of their way, crafting things, buying things, gathering with me on Zoom, (more were there on the call not pictured) and for being sources of true happiness on my day (and every day), and lastly myself for celebrating life and successfully baking my own birthday cake from scratch, a sort of deconstructed cake broken into a bowl with liquid chocolate drizzled over it that my Mama used to make when I was a kid. 😍 #birthdaylove #cherishedday #gratefulheart
