This graph from @carbonbrief shows how fast we need to cut our emissions of CO2 to stay within the remaining carbon budget for 1,5°C of global temperature rise. It basically illustrates what I’ve been saying in all my speeches since this summer.
It’s time to start asking our elected officials how they are going to achieve this… Or let them explain why we should give up on the 1,5°C target, and by doing so significantly increase the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.
And make sure they understand that this is for a 66% chance of staying below 1,5°C of average temperature rise, and that 66% does not include the global aspect of equity, most feedback loops, non-linear tipping points nor additional warming hidden by air pollution.
This can no longer be news among other news, an “important topic” among other topics, a “political issue” among other political issues or a crisis among other crises.
This is not party politics or opinions.
This is a scientific fact. This is an existential emergency. And we must start treating it as such.
Because unless we start to focus everything on this, our targets will soon be out of reach.
I know it shouldn’t be up to you and me to make sure that the science from the IPCC reaches the public but unfortunately this is how it is. So please share!
