Natalie Gumede Instagram – These beautiful dear creatures are living out the autumn of their lives at the Samui Ethical Elephant Sanctuary. The tales of abuse that they had all suffered were utterly harrowing, and yet these elephants had slowly learned to trust humans again to allow us to feed them and witness them in a (semi) natural habitat. I was struck by a sense of kindness and compassion in their eyes, and one of the carers told us that the elephants see us humans as ‘cute – like puppies.’ There wasn’t one visitor left unmoved by their presence, or their stories, and I wondered what impact that may leave in consideration of how we treat our incredible animal kingdom as a whole. We have so much to learn from every being that walks this earth, so this New Year and every one beyond, I hope to walk with more kindness and compassion. The world needs that now more than ever – let’s be more elephant. (I love cucumbers like they do so that’s a good start!)
