Sipiwe Moyo Instagram – I have to give a shout out to my medical care team @nyulangone hospital/Cityscape Maternal Fetal Medicine. On my birthing day earlier this month, seeing my nurse with this pin on was more than just a relief, it was a vote of confidence that I might survive. As an African-American woman, I’ve had many negative medical experiences in the course of my adult life including a nearly fatal birthing outcome due to a doctor’s negligence (not at NYU, but at a less conscientious hospital). This is very common for African-American women in this country. Much too often, black women are subject to discrimination in the health care field — 22 percent report discrimination when going to the doctor or clinic. As a matter of fact, whenever in the hospital my husband and I make sure to request that attention be paid to my concerns of pain and that any other requests of mine be taken seriously. This is not a matter of wanting good customer service — we do this as a matter of life and death. Many times I’ve had to ask for a medical care professional to be “more gentle” during an IV placement, ultrasound, and other procedures. All of this to say, I’m glad to see hospitals like @nyulangone taking this matter seriously. I had a very positive birthing experience there and I wish this to be the case for all moms everywhere #blackmothersmatter🤱🏾 .
