Ian Verdun Instagram – I am a black man. A creole man. For my entire life I’ve had to school people about my race, been put in the position where I’ve constantly had to justify my blackness to complete strangers. I’ve had to teach other Americans about American history, about creole history and how the two are inexorably tied. Black people come in many shades, a byproduct of hundreds of years of colonialism and ancestral rape. This is black history. Black history is American history. This history is brutal, bloody and positively rage inducing. Our history is available for all to learn, the truth has always been there, but a large part of American culture is to mythologize our past. To lie to ourselves about the very recent history of rampant state sanctioned terrorism against American citizens. I challenge every American to research our FULL history. To accept the context of this nation, and our collective complicity in such widespread barbarism. Until we ALL (white people) come to terms with this history and how it informs our modern injustices, we will never claim the promise of America. Time for some soul searching, this is who we’ve ALWAYS been. But it doesnt have to be who we continue to be.
