It’s not only police brutality
It’s inertia in the face of a black man’s murder
That contributes to our mortality
It’s the exhaustion we feel
At the safety we don’t
And the world that we’re handing our children
It’s not just racism that does them harm
It’s the looking away that will kill them
It’s the working twice as hard
To do half as well
And always having to ingratiate
To privilege, to the system, to every room we’re in
-A white person just can’t appreciate
It’s a heavy heart that absorbs this week’s news
Another of us has been slain
But unless we collectively carry this cross
We will witness this horror again
Sometimes the face of oppression smiles
If that suits you, you’ll never ask why
It’s an uncomfortable truth to have to face
You live in a comfortable lie
It might not feel like your battle
You think you’ve enough on your plate
But if you declare ‘all lives matter’
Know that you’re choosing the side of hate
We ALL feel helpless, powerless, lost
But another black life is too high a cost
When you struggle to know how to help, raise a hand
-Even this shows that shoulder to shoulder you stand
Listen.
Legislate.
Petition.
Educate.
Question.
Formulate.
For George.
Do not wait.
Black lives.
Count on it.
