Amaryllis Fox Instagram – The War on Drugs has cost over $1 trillion dollars in taxpayer money and claimed over half a million human lives. It has put more people — especially people of color — in prisons and morgues, in the United States and overseas, than any other existing policy.

To understand what’s fueling such a brutal and broken system, I teamed up with @netflix, former Navy Seal @kajlarsen, and Anthony Bourdain’s @zpzproduction to create a groundbreaking new documentary series, The Business of Drugs, dropping worldwide on Netflix, July 14th.

Together, we set out to understand the economics of the drug trade, investigating the shadowy power brokers making millions from today’s spiraling violence and addiction — yes, cartels, but also those we trust most in our midst — politicians and security services, pharmaceutical companies and media moguls, doctors and police, governments and military brass.

Along the way, we embed with Colombian commandos, Kenyan heroin mules, Burmese insurgent forces, Chinese dark web chemists, Mexican border police, and good old fashioned American pill mills — all to investigate how this longest of American wars has failed to stem the flow of drugs while simultaneously enriching kingpins, multinationals, governments and militias around the world.
