Posted @withregram • @juliannemoore #Repost @studentsdemand ・・・ Yesterday was Hadiya Pendleton’s birthday. She would have been 23, but she was shot and killed at only 15, in a park taking cover from rain. After she was killed, Hadiya’s friends, including @mad_liberator, wore orange and launched Project Orange Tree in her honor. They chose orange because it’s the color worn by hunters to signal their personhood so that other hunters do not shoot. New York gun violence prevention advocate Erica Ford also spearheaded orange as the color of peace through her work with her organization, @lifecampinc, organizing against gun violence in Queens, NYC. Collectively, it has become the color symbolic of solidarity with survivors and action against gun violence. On Friday, June 5 — National Gun Violence Awareness Day — we #WearOrange to honor Hadiya and all victims and survivors of gun violence and to bring attention to the deadly intersection of racism, white supremacy, and gun violence in America, where Black people are 10x more likely to die by gun homicide than white people.
