Kim Delaney Instagram – I’m thinking about our Independence Day, which many of us will celebrate Saturday. I’m thinking a lot about the meaning of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness “, especially in this challenging year. I learned the other day about a pair of letters John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, on July 3, 1776—the day after the Continental Congress in Philadelphia (my home town!) voted to declare independence from Great Britain. His words are so moving. He tells Abigail that he believes July 2 will be the day Americans will celebrate as their “day of deliverance “. But what impressed me most how Adams clearly understood the gravity of the struggle ahead: “You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil, and the blood, and treasure, that it will cost us to maintain this declaration…Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth all the means.” Adams might have been off by two days, but I hope we can all find hope and inspiration in his words, 244 years later. | Posted on 03/Jul/2020 23:05:51
