James McAvoy Instagram – Congratulations pal. Beautifully put Thank you Antonyo Awards for this recognition.
I take a moment from the deep mourning that has surrounded me the past few weeks and the posting that I feel best reflects my commitment to turning the grief in to action.
I take this moment to honour pride against the backdrop of pain.
I feel so proud to represent Betrayal on Broadway.
I feel so proud to be welcomed in to this particular fold of Broadway artists, as we gladly take this moment to appreciate each other’s gifts and our unique and powerful diasporic heritage.
I feel proud to represent my work, my gender and my lineage at a time when our voices are raised in promise and power.
I am proud to be nominated on a continent that is not my own and has embraced me tightly and so often.
I feel proud to represent Hackney, along with Harold Pinter. An artist who challenged the status quo. An artist who was concerned with human rights and speaking truth to power on behalf of every citizen of the world.
I feel proud to have played Emma, the only female character, orbited by extraordinary men.
I feel proud to know these three men and I marvel at their craft and the way we held each other through an incredibly forensic examination of human love and human pain.
I am proud to have collaborated with Jamie and his company for so many years, we made a silent pact to push the envelope as far as we could over a decade ago.
I feel proud of every nominee in this new awards. There is no competition. There is only holding space for each other and observing the memory of Juneteenth and all those who never got to see their dreams realised. All of those who were pitted against each other under the umbrella of oppression, so that the violence from without, would turn within.
We say, not anymore and not now.
We have the privilege to take our rage to the stage.
I feel proud and hopeful that one day we will not need awards at all, because we will ALL be celebrated ALL the time because we are ALL making work that touches the human spirit.
I believe in New York.
I believe in Broadway.
Keep going.
Keep voting.
The link in my bio will guide you to the extraordinary artists acknowledged.
Thank you
