Michael Bearden Instagram – As a conductor, one of the first things you must learn is how to analyze a score. It’s the only way to interpret the composers intentions. However, one can never really know “exact” intentions, just from written notes on a page. There are no YouTube clips of Beethoven conducting the most famous 8 notes of his 5th symphony. (Although how sick would that be?☺️) Fortunately for pop music, we have the recordings. But, even then, some of the details get lost. If you’re lucky enough to have access to the isolated tracks, the artists, producers, or musicians who recorded the tracks, you can know exactly what was done. I’m blessed in my career to have this kind of access often. When it comes to Michael Jackson keyboard parts, there is no debate on who is the foremost authority. Greg Phillanganes! He’s played on just about every significant MJ record ever made. And, he’s invented some of the greatest keyboard parts in the history of recorded music! Period! Even outside of MJ. So this clip today, was taught directly to me from the mastermind who came up with it. I’m only focusing on the right hand lines. I’m not showing the left hand. Also, this is at the end of the song. The 1st two phrases are repeated in the intro and body of the song. Once you learn this correctly, you have the whole song. I get so many people showing me clips of them playing MJ songs.
