Playing dress up was my favorite thing as a little girl. Happy Juneteenth! We at IFAW are proud to commemorate Juneteenth today, a symbolic date celebrating the end of enslavement in the United States and representing freedom for Black Americans. In light of the crisis of racial injustice and systemic oppression in the United States and around the world, itβs more important than ever to acknowledge the history of Juneteenth. β β

On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in the deepest parts of the former Confederacy learned they were free, as word of the end of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation reached Galveston, Texas. Months later, the ratification of the 13th Amendment ended enslavement throughout the U.S. Today, Juneteenth is marked with celebrations, gatherings, and time for reflection.β β

This year, we will honor Juneteenth as an additional holiday, closing offices across IFAW, to mark the journey and freedom of Black people in the U.S., recognize the many achievements and contributions that Black people have made to American history and culture, and reflect on the struggles caused by racial injustice while celebrating the great diversity of our global community. Beginning in 2021, we will recognize Juneteenth as a U.S. holiday with purposeful contemplation and action. β β
