alex daddario (baywatch, women who kill, true detective, percy jackson) plays Margaret, who is an english pronounciation teacher at air pro stewardess school in tokyo, japan; where she spends her nights getting drunk at jiro’s bar with her friends, incl. Ines played by the amazing carice van houten (lady melisandre from game of thrones). she *does not* have her sh1t together & is v much a lost soul antihero protagonist making her way through life, dealing with mental health in her own way (the book goes into more detail than the film, but her older brother frank is schizophrenic); until she meets the mysterious Kazu (takehiro hira), who is bound by duty to his family business in the shadows & a promised marital alliance fated in his future.

i really loved & appreciated the care to detail that was taken to show a v authentically lived in portrayal of tokyo ex-pat life that is rare to see represented in American media. the themes of loneliness, solitude, wabisabi, fleeting perfection—all felt honest & vulnerable. there were so many beautiful moments of human connection & humor that really spoke to me. the ending hit me in the heart center, & alex daddario’s acting in that final sequence left me feeling v reminded of how angelina jolie’s acting in the final sequence of gia made me feel, & the performance sat with me for a few days before i could fully shake it off, in the best way. if you are looking for something moody to watch, or you just want more female antihero stories in your life like me, catch lost girls and love hotels on digital & on demand now ;)) | Posted on 27/Sep/2020 05:24:43
