It seems you’ve fallen victim to some editorial mischief-making, & have been asked to comment on a radio interview you hadn’t heard, relying instead on a characterization presented to you. If you had in fact heard BBCRadio 4’s Today Programme on 01/08/20 you’d know I never mentioned the UK Government. So the inference that the comments I made were directed toward either you or your Government is entirely a construction of the paper’s editor, who, I am told, had heard the interview.
Perhaps it would be wise in the future not to respond out of hand when asked for comment, even by a publication traditionally seen as friendly to your policies. They haven’t done you any favours this time, by making you respond to charges never leveled against you. It just makes you seem guilty of the very thing of which you weren’t accused. For the record, I still have not made that imputation I am supposed to have made against you, The Sunday Telegraph has.
If your remarks had been left there I would have been happy to do the same, but your ensuing personal snark, Tim, deserves a response. It’s no surprise to me that you, a Tory MP, believes success can be inherited. It may well be so in your experience, but my father has been dead for 18 years. What limited success I have enjoyed is ultimately a result of hard work & not giving up during hard times along with a doubtless debatable degree of talent graced by that all-important ingredient, luck. Like many people who come to positions of power you also seem to think that opinions you don’t like ought not to be given the opportunity to be heard. But speaking one’s mind is a cherished freedom in Western Democracies. All sorts of people are given the opportunity to say whatever rubbish is on their minds, & some of them hold elected office. Finally, I’d like to congratulate you on becoming Britain’s answer to Laura Ingraham with your own version of ‘shut up and dribble’.
To the editor of the paper I’d like to say bravo on filling what was obviously going to be a slow news day during the ‘silly season’ by inventing a story that didn’t exist.
