SINGLE. TIME. It’s poetic and simple in its presentation which allows easy digestion for younger kids yet still so immensely powerful & moving. Thank you brother James, our elder Marcus is shining his light down on you!! Berkeley is loving cursive writing and determined to master this lost writing technique. Which I’m grateful for because I too love to write in cursive. It can be so beautiful. Thanks to @blossomandroot for our ‘we come from stardust’ nature project which saw us create a nature mobile to help understand the cosmos and the role the sun along with the planets our solar system. And of course, a big shoutout to @singaporemath for the fun & challenging dimensions 1st grade math. I’ll say this as we approach the end of our 2nd month of homeschooling—every bump in the road along the way is 100%%%% worth it when I see/hear Berkeley apply the concepts/history etc she’s learning in every day life. To watch her mind, knowledge and capacity for learning expand right before my eyes has been a treasure to see. That’s not to say we don’t bump heads at times, or there aren’t struggles in this process but I’d rather deal with those than what is created when a black child is indoctrinated their entire life by a white supremacist educational system. You may be successful, even wealthy…but the mental shackles placed on the mind do irreparable damage to the psyche and soul. Never permitting the black adult to fully embrace, nor understand our history, culture, nor our fully realized greatness. Therefore incapable of fully grasping the systems in place created to intentionally keep us in ‘our place.’ Imagine celebrating your ancestors oppressors: religion, holidays, culture and history while turning your nose down at your own! The voices of ancestors whisper your name, through their strength & perseverance you came. This great Gift bestowed upon you can never be taken…once that fire inside you is awakened. Around the 3rd week, on my day to come to class, I was looking at the children’s artwork displayed around the classroom. I stopped in front of Berkeley’s work and my heart sank. The little girl in her photo was colored white with blonde hair. Later that day, at home Rock and I asked Berkeley why she chose to color the girl that way. And she innocently shrugged her shoulders and said, ‘I don’t know. Everyone else’s looked like this.’ Now, mind you this is 1) a class that only had 2 blondes and a handful of brown kids and 2) coming from a 5 yr old that has never watched Frozen/white disney princess stuff or had white dolls. (because we are very aware of the importance in instilling self love in her & supplying an environment rich with things that reflect what she looks like. Considering this is a country that doesn’t find value in black beauty) Rock and I, with love of course, talked to her about the importance of depicting her art in a way that honors her own aesthetic. Regardless of what is happening around her. Some parents may read this and think: what’s the big deal? or, we don’t harp on race in our house. That’s fine if you’re white. But for black & brown children, it’s not OK. This is the subtle start of self hate. Planting seeds of inferiority and finding fault in our blackness while finding value in that which is white and ‘right’. So a year later, as we embark on our homeschool journey, the pure joy I feel when I see the natural inclination in Berkeley to love blackness, to have pride in her culture, her ancestors and her history. To always search out ways to celebrate the beauty that is in her skin and the rhythm of the blood that flows through her veins…words cannot properly explain my own happiness watching her grow into a strong, intelligent, proud black girl. Unapologetic in her love for her people. Embracing the responsibility that comes with the Gift of brown skin. PRO-BLACK is not anti-white! Teach these babies to honor who they are. ALL of themselves. Including this beautiful melanin. #bl Posted @withregram • @mrs_maya_dunbar This week we continue to enjoy some great books (Amazing Grace is photographed here). Recently we wrapped up Kandinsky’s art and have graduated to Steichen, beginning with his Composition de Tournesol (sunflower) which Berkeley did her own interpretation of while learning that shapes put together can make other shapes. Pharaoh is having great fun working on his hand/eye coordination while working his number board while Czar continues to enjoy all of the different ways there are to master his numbers. It’s a short week for us but a fun, knowledge filled one nonetheless. Regardless of which way you’re choosing to school your children, I hope everyone is finding peace and rhythm to this new normal…for your own mental well being and the kiddos! ❤️ #blackhomeschoolers #blackhomeschooling #blackhomeschoolfamily #art #momof4 #homeschool #blackfamilies #blackpride #blackpower #blacklove Posted @withregram • @mrs_maya_dunbar This week we continue to enjoy some great books (Amazing Grace is photographed here). I can not standby and watch my people die helplessly and we continue to post on here like everything is okay. No it is not okay. Today 10/20/2020 Peaceful protesters are being shot at by military forces (Look this up #ENDSARS) They are killing us. This is the blood of an innocent civilian on the Nigerian flag. They are taking lives as we speak. This will not stand. I am personally asking for everyone who follows us and support us to support this movement. Please share using the hashtag and raise awareness to the senseless killings and brutality being dealt out to the people at the frontlines. This is a massacre. My heart is bleeding for the lost lives. How many more people have to die for the government to do something about police brutality. The very thing we are protesting against, they are using to shut us up. Make it make sense!!!! #endsars #endsarsnow #endpolicebrutality” Signed: @chika.okoli We are aligned. #EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria Posted @withregram • @mrs_maya_dunbar A little peak into our Tuesday 😍. Creative expression is a huge part of our curriculum so you’ll see two pieces Berkeley did. Of course, this proud black child decided to put our flag on the mountain top. She also did a portrait of me lol. ✊🏾 @singaporemath is a daily part of our learning and I absolutely adore this curriculum. Czar is doing their PreK books and both are fantastic. Spanish is our foreign language choice and so far WE are learning a lot lol. (I’ve forgotten 80% of the Spanish I ‘learned’ growing up 🤦🏽♀️). We are focused on our Mother continent of Africa in our geography studies and with 54 countries in total, we focus on 1 each day. Where we learn the languages spoken, common crops, population, fun facts, flag and watch various videos after the kids locate it on our globe. We’re also taking a deeper dive into our Buddhism so that she can start to truly comprehend what we as her parents, believe and love/live by. (World religion is part of our education, so that our children can grow to understand ALL of the world’s religions and can choose (or not) which, if any, speak to them.) Angela Davis is our black HERO this week, which has been a joy to watch Berkeley learn the impact that Ms Davis had/has and also showcase that black women were/are major players in the continuing fight of justice for our black brothers and sisters. Writing technique is also a morning ritual we have while I read from Clare Pierson’s ‘Among the People’ series. Today’s short story was about a slow turtle that finds himself in trouble when he doesn’t keep up with his siblings. So we painted rocks for our ‘turtles’ and re-enacted our version of the tale. 😂 Language Arts is a combination of The Good & Beautiful along with the online ‘Night Zoo Keeper’ learning game and MobyMax. Our days usually wrap up by lunch time or shortly thereafter. Some days are super short, while others take us on journeys long past noon. The beauty in homeschooling is I know what’s being taught, what needs more work and can watch in real time, their brains/knowledge expanding. #blackhomeschoolers TagsRockmond Dunbar Previous articleActor Bryan Cranston HD Photos and Wallpapers November 2020Next articleActress Nikki Tamboli HD Photos and Wallpapers November 2020
