Susan Rice Instagram – This Juneteenth I’ve been thinking about my great grandfather, Walter Rice, who escaped slavery in South Carolina to fight for his freedom in the Union Army, went on to earn a college degree, and founded the Bordentown School in New Jersey in 1886. This school educated generations of Black kids in college prep and vocational skills, becoming known as the “Tuskegee of the North.” Walter wasn’t “given” freedom, he took it for himself and did everything he could to try and see that promise of freedom fulfilled. His work continues, but now it’s on all of us. PC: NJ State Archives | Posted on 20/Jun/2020 07:41:55
