I know plenty of us have been waking up with a despair, an overwhelming anxiety, an inner alarm that is persistent, a desire to get closer to truth and a pain that we have been steered into so many distracting dark corners. I wanted to share this poem with you all that was shared with me. Martín Espada reminded me, along with countless entities in my life, that our imaginations are not imprisoned property, our imaginations are free, the decision is our own to activate it and to make it reality.

A win felt really good yesterday. And a wave of relief, as we take a step away from 4 years of lies, misinformation, and mania… there were acknowledgements from Biden and Harris last night that needed to be heard. They also said things that we must continue to hold politicians accountable to, that’s our job, and there’s a ton of work to still be done, a lot of understanding that needs to be embraced, truths that need to be treated as fact. And when things aren’t working, I’m learning, we don’t just accept it, we fight for what we deserve. We all deserve quality and justice. Keep asking ourselves the question of who we want to be in a world we want to live in, how can we show up for ourselves and others, how do we move towards success and take community with us. “What is now proved was once only imagined”

I’m a queer, trans poet, cultural strategist, public speaker, consultant, and story collector. I’m committed cultivating healing-centered spaces for queer, trans, and intersex communities. I believe in the beauty of vulnerability and the strength in the stories our bodies hold. I trust that storytelling is an ancestral form of healing magic, so I try to tell my own, sometimes. I self-published my chapbook, Intentional Musings on Staying Alive When I Want To Die (2019), an honest depiction of navigating mental health at the intersections of race and gender, and leaning into my own healing (link in my bio!).

To me, #TransAwarenessWeek is an opportunity to cis people to really unpack their privilege and find intentional ways follow the trans leadership. Thank you for this book. The book of yours that no one wanted. The book that gives me hope as a young gay man, that maybe I could lose the hate I carried for myself, that I could begin to ask myself what it looks like to love myself and someone else.
Voting, to me, when everyone can vote fairly, is a clear example of our potential Freedom as Americans. It is a way to have our voices heard as a collective, it is a way to inspire and be a part of change. Each vote counts, even down to the Electoral College, it is our individual voices that make the difference. We have responsibilities as members of a Country to vote for our liberties and how the systems we live in function. Importantly, too, voting on a local level helps ensure that our voices and our belief systems are being looked after, supported and lifted. By electing our local Judges, DA officials, etc.; WE make this happen.
As many of us are sitting at home wondering if another stimulus check will come, if $1200 is a defining number of our worth, as people are sick and dying and COVID-19 cases rise, as many of us are beginning to wake up to the systemic racism we operate within, the level of white supremacy that runs rampant in our government, our wallets, and our current administration…we can only move towards a gradual progression in the other direction, a direction in a system that reflects a world that a community can imagine, a much more beautiful and caring world. My vote this election is my commitment to fighting for better options on the 2024 ballot, it is my commitment to fighting for my marginalized neighbors lives, it is a commitment to fight for human rights to not be a discussion that needs to be voted on, but something that is agreed as a given and essential in opening the doors to a future of possibilities and improvements that we are too blind to see now.
Voting is about putting our worth out there, defining it for ourselves together, and letting a system know that we are here, we won’t settle, we have rights, and we will fight.
