Jaime Murray Instagram – Rest in Power Charlie Pride, one of the biggest country music legends of all time.
Born in Sledge, Mississippi, in 1934, Pride picked cotton, played baseball in the Negro leagues, served in the U.S. Army, and worked in a smelting plant in Montana before moving to Nashville and becoming country music’s first black superstar.
He scored 52 Top 10 country hits, including 29 Number Ones. Charlie had 40 #1 hit singles between the years of 1964-2008. He sold 70 million records during his career, has legions of fans, and last year received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys
Just last month, Pride, a three-time Grammy winner, was honored by the Country Music Association with the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award. He performed on the telecast with country singer Jimmie Allen, recreating “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’.” It would be Pride’s final performance.
Charlie’s music taught many listeners that country music was not just white but also African American music as well & had a very important role in breaking up the false mythology of white cowboy culture. Black cowboys were a fixture of the American West as early as the beginning of the 19th century. Following the Civil War, former slaves found freedom on the open range, becoming horsebreakers, rodeo performers, and even ranch foremen. Historians now estimate that as many as one in four cowboys were black. Country music grew out of both white and black folk traditions and came to be thought of as “white,” but there were always black folk performers, too, even if many of their contributions have been lost to history.
