Anne Rice

Anne Rice Instagram – Today we are grieving the loss of Anne’s wildly talented and endlessly kind cousin, cinematographer Allen Daviau, the man who stood behind the lens for films such as E.T. and EMPIRE OF THE SUN. Here’s a remember of Allen written Anne’s son @christopher.rice.writer:
My cousin Allen Daviau died last night of COVID-19. While I might be biased, he was, in my opinion, one of the greatest cinematographers in modern Hollywood. He will probably be most remembered for his work on E.T. But I believe his masterpiece was Stephen Spielberg’s EMPIRE OF THE SUN. One of my fondest memories of Allen is when he came to visit us when I was a boy and explained for me in detail how he helped craft the scene in which Mrs. Victor, played by Miranda Richardson, peacefully passes a way at the exact moment Hiroshima is bombed on the distant horizon. It remains for me one of the most striking and subtle and haunting scenes in a film, and I am enormously proud my brilliant cousin helped bring it to life. Allen was a man who radiated kindness. I never knew him to raise his voice or lose his patience. For me, a child obsessed with the movies, he brought the magic of Hollywood to our home when I was young and he did so on a tide of gentle generosity. Together, he and my mother were unique members of their family who reached for big dreams with absolute courage. They were blessed to succeed, and the bond between them was always like that of a brother and sister. Goodbye, my sweet, brilliant cousin. You live on for us in the many frames of beautiful film you helped bring into the world. And your loss sadly makes this terrible pandemic feel all the more real. | Posted on 17/Apr/2020 01:36:17
