Looking through a great book of Revolutionary Art by #emorydouglas and being reminded of the root causes of the violence perpetrated by police and the rebellion that results in reaction. Follow the money. Slave patrols and night watches later became the legitimate police forces in this country: slave catchers hired by the wealthy. It is not a coincidence and should not shock anyone that modern policing harbors deeply racist attitudes and players given its origins. Looking forward to getting past the distractions and talking about the dismantling of institutionalized racism in the police force, demilitarization of police, training towards deescalation, getting rid of corrupt DA’s, bigoted police commissioners, weak enabling mayors, reforming of the police union, laws which protect cops from prosecution and prevent previous misconduct being made public, and the code of silence among cops which makes all cops look shitty when injustices take place.
People are getting more and more agitated. I predict that we’ll all be talking a lot more about 2nd amendment rights going forward which clearly doesn’t apply to all Americans and which creates all kinds of weird power dynamics.
These issues affect ALL Americans’ quality of life and I was really encouraged to see so many diverse faces protesting together yesterday in solidarity and in the pursuit of justice for #georgefloyd
