Arjun Kamath Instagram – Throughout my 11-year journey of photography, one thing has been a constant. I absolutely love street photography, clicking portraits in particular. Since the day I held a camera for the first time, I have been fascinated with faces & characters, along with the colourful surprises that lay scattered for me in every corner. And till date, I feel the same electrifying enthusiasm whenever I head out to capture the essence of Indian streets & its people, always trying to showcase their character & stories through my images.

One such gleeful moment came about for me in the fruit market of Paithan, Maharashtra. It was a busy day on the streets &I was navigating through carts decorated with vibrant fruits when I saw this man. These days, you don’t easily find people wearing ethnic attire on the regular, so when I saw his bright red turban, I was instantly fascinated. At the time, he was buying apples from a lady, but amidst the frenzy, I could not find the right frame to click.

So, I followed him as he left the apple cart, waiting for the right moment to take a picture. Soon, as he took a seat, I walked up to the corner & clicked the shutter button on my camera, capturing his curious gaze. I could tell from his expressions that he must have encountered a DSLR very few times in his life, and I was glad to have frozen that sweet moment in time. Furthermore, I have always been drawn to frames where the expressions of my subject are organic & raw, which I was able to capture here untarnished since the man barely saw me approaching.

Right after, the moment I put my camera down, he greeted me with the warmest smile & joined hands to convey a Namaste. I smiled back at the warmth in his simple gesture. As I walked away, I thought to myself how this is the beauty of travelling in India, where I get to meet all these friendly strangers who always leave their mark. So many times have I been greeted with genuine smiles, wishes of a happy journey, and sweet goodbyes, that even in a strange land, I end up feeling at home. And I couldn’t be happier about it.
