What a gift tonight. After our dear friend, the amazing @thenormanlear accepted The Carol Burnett Award for outstanding contributions to television at The Golden Globes, we got on our weekly zoom call, where, as dear friends, we occasionally have cigars and talk about life or have wonderful conversations. In person, we will one day play music together again–– but for now we still connect weekly on our zoom cigar nights. In this photo, here we all pull on our ear lobes as Norman did on the Globes in honor of Carol Burnett. Like Norman said, as Carol said, “I’m so we glad we had this time together.” We’re all so glad we had this time together— Tonight dear Norman, and for many nights to come.

Just checking in and talking, singing, smoking cigars… Such love for these gents. Keep your friends close and safe— Zoom can work. February is Black History Month, and Sydney @sydneysnoble is spreading awareness about how scleroderma affected her. “I find it extremely important to share my story this month,“ she says, because of the “lack of awareness about scleroderma plus the higher incidence of this disease within the Black community.”
Like many patients, Sydney made difficult changes to her life when she was diagnosed a little over a year ago. “Prior to being diagnosed I was a professional dancer, photographer, and full-time business owner who juggled all three hustles simultaneously,” she says. Amidst the loss of these important parts of her life, Sydney’s grateful that she was able to be diagnosed quickly, but she realizes that’s not always true for others. “Scleroderma compared to other autoimmune diseases is so unknown within the nation today,” Sydney explains.
It’s about more than just awareness for Sydney – she notes that research is critical. “Finding a cure is of the utmost importance,” she says, but also “finding treatment plans in the immediate future that are as safe and healthy for the body as possible.”
In the meantime, Sydney’s positive mindset has kept her strong in the face of these challenges. “Although my life path has been forever changed I was able to adapt and continue on with running my candle business, The Noble Brand,” she says. “Just because my immune system is fighting me, that doesn’t mean I can’t fight back.”

Please join us in congratulating SRF Scientific Advisor, Dan Kastner, MD, PhD, who has been awarded this year’s Crafoord Prize in Polyarthritis by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for discovering and elucidating the characteristics of a class of diseases called autoinflammatory diseases.
The Crafoord Prize is one of the major international science prizes, with subject areas that complement the Nobel Prizes and rotate from year to year. It is considered to be a complement to–and for some researchers a precursor to–a Nobel Prize.
“What Dr. Kastner has accomplished is absolutely groundbreaking. The concept of autoinflammatory disorders didn’t exist before he identified the cause behind a number of them,” said Olle Kämpe, a professor of clinical endocrinology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, who is a member of The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and chair of the Prize Committee.
Through Dr. Kastner’s tenure at the NIH, where he is currently Scientific Chief of the Intramural Division of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), he has identified 16 autoinflammatory genetic disorders and found effective treatments for at least 12 of them, establishing a whole new field of medicine.
