Andrea Jeremiah Instagram – The other day, someone on set said to me- ‘oh you are reading Hilary Mantel ?!’ To which I retorted- ‘why, do I not look like the kind of person who can read a book by Hilary Mantel ?’ And that’s the sad truth isn’t it, a female actor in India is not supposed to be intelligent ! And this shows through in every aspect of Indian cinema !

Firstly, most producers & film-makers are men, and they dictate the terms of the film industry. And when a female film-maker comes along, she has to be able to write scripts for a hero to prove her mettle. Because there aren’t enough men writing content for men, women need to do it as well💁🏻‍♀️

Secondly, having a well-written female role in a film is the exception, NOT the rule. How ironic, considering men are raised by women, wed to women, and they in turn father women. Why then is a woman still considered an accessory in a man’s story when in fact she is the very fabric of it ?

Thirdly, when a female actor asks questions on a set(however reasonable or intelligent they might be) she is considered ‘difficult to work with’. The same director will bend over backwards to please a ‘hero’, but if a female actor dares to question why a particular scene is staged a certain way, oh my god, she is crossing the line !

And let’s not even talk about the disparity in remuneration. With the exception of a few, most female actors playing lead roles get paid less than male actors in supporting or comic roles.

Im pretty damn sure I’m not the only female actor out there reading Hilary Mantel. As a matter of fact, I know plenty of male actors who DO NOT READ AT ALL. And nobody seems to mind, nobody questions their intelligence.
