ARCHENEMY (2020) Archenemy is an indie superhero neo-noir action thriller written and directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer (@adamegypt666) based in a story created by Mortimer with Lucas Passmore. King of the Nerds (all hail!), Joe Manganiello (@joemanganiello) co-produced the film, stars in the leading role alongside Skylan Brooks (@skylan_b), Zolee Griggs (@zoleeg), Glenn Howerton (@glennhowerton), Paul Scheer (@paulscheer) and Amy Seimetz. Archenemy centres around Max Fist, a mysterious drunk who claims to be a superhero from another dimension, who fell through space and time whilst combatting his archenemy, Cleo Ventrik. He finds himself stranded on Earth, aged and powerless. No one believes his story, except for local teen journalist, Hamster, who begins to investigate and document his exploit before coming into conflict with a dangerous drug lord. Archenemy was shot by Halyna Hutchins (@halynahutchins), with production design from Ariel Vida (@arielvida), art direction from Kati Simon (@kati_msimon), and we have to thank Sunando (@sunandoisms) for the film’s incredible animated cutscenes. Manganiello is absolutely ELECTRIC as Max Fist. He’s built for roles like this. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. The entire cast give incredible performances, but particular kudos has to go to Glenn Howerton’s nefarious antagonist, ‘The Manager’ – any fans of Always Sunny knows Howerton’s insanely charismatic ‘maniac’ range but this is another tier altogether. The film’s neo-noir aesthetic is beyond gorgeous– it’s real world colour palette is quite muted and neutral for the most part, a cacophony of industrialised, cooler tones, bolstered by pops of vibrant colour. The textures are unpolished – grit and grunge, which really solidifies the world building. This imagery vs the dynamic, bold visuals of the animated sequences blend effortlessly together. I absolutely loved this film – It’s everything you could possibly want out to screen.
