In the last eleven months we have carried his image on signs and chanted his name in the streets. All in the name of another Black life that mattered.
We’ve said this before, but the thing about martyrdom is that sometimes in the whirlwind and magnitude of a cause we lose sight of the life that sparked it.
So today as we come out once more, we do so because George’s life mattered. We do so not just for a broader call to action that carries on, but for his humanity. For the life he lost. For his family and friends who’ve had to bear the unimaginable pain of the last eleven months and particularly these past three weeks of trial.
We do so for George. 🖤

(My words now:) Nothing will ever give Gianna Floyd her daddy back. Nothing will give his family and friends their cousin, boyfriend, brother back. This will always be a horror and tragedy. But I hope they feel a little more peace than they did yesterday. This story is not and cannot be about the condemnation of “one bad apple.” We must radically change the systems that enabled Derek Chauvin to murder George Floyd, that make it historic Chauvin was actually punished. As @drjasonpolitics just said on MSNBC, a win would have been George Floyd not being murdered in the first place.
