Madeline Weinstein Instagram – Hey friends, this is a photo of Sha-Asia Washington and her partner Juwan Lopez. The second photo is of their baby Khloe. Last week Sha-Asia died at Woodhull Med Center in Bed-Stuy Bk during an emergency c-section. I knew that the maternal mortality rate was higher for Black women in the US than for white women, but not that it’s roughly 3 times as high nationally, and 12 times as high in NYC. Medical racism is horrifyingly real, with deadly results, and I am so sad for all the Black women (and Black people who don’t identify as women) in this country and my life who have gone through scary birthing experiences in which they felt unheard or dismissed, or who want to have children but don’t feel supported by this country’s medical system. I wish there was a way to link it here, but if you search “fundraiser for Juwan Lopez” and “require NY hospitals to publish data on pregnancy outcomes” you’ll find respectively a fundraiser for Juwan (and baby Khloe), and a petition to demand more transparency from NYC hospitals so families can make more informed decisions when choosing where to give birth, and so hospitals with high rates of maternal mortality and complications (esp. for Black women) can be held accountable.
