beneath discarded and torn paper
that inside
might exist a revelation
and like balloons that drifted into
bronchioles of barren branches
–and where beneath and above
exists daily simpler joys
of some lemons in a bowl
catching sunlight!–
might this discarded plastic egg
–its jelly surprise–
be less than every possiblity
it’s latent magic
the greater unopened?
oh, the anticipation of memory
but the river comes high now
with her wanton promising
of frigid winter’s end
and all this year’s tomorrows
piled atop a year of yesterdays
spent in the question
when? and, are we safe?
and, is this all there is?
wrap these gifts in shiny paper and bows
continue this exercise
of loving extravagantly
even as reflections in a still and shallow pond
reveal our true nature
be kind, be patient my child
forgive us
forgive yourself
Spring is here
bossy and gorgeous
as ever.
