In celebration of @DisneyRaya’s #GoldOpen, we’re celebrating Southeast Asian leaders | Maurissa Tancharoen is a Thai writer and producer known for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Spartacus.

”When I was a little girl, I resented how long it took to write my last name. All those letters that seemed like they shouldn’t be next to one another, extending forever on the page. I wanted my name to be simple, maybe even one syllable, something easier for everyone else to read and say. Whenever someone struggled to pronounce my name, I felt the need to apologize and explain – “most Thai surnames are long, yes my parents are from Thailand but I was born here, oh you like Thai food? Cool cool.” In explaining my name, I was explaining myself. Why I was different and why I was even here. At the time I didn’t know that my story was a beautiful one, and it didn’t help that I never saw stories like mine on screen.

Now in my work as a writer and producer, when I see my name with all its letters extending forever on the screen, I’m reminded of my parents, how far they had to come, how hard they’ve had to work to raise and empower their two children to thrive in America. I see my name and I’m grateful I now have the chance to influence the overall narrative by including stories like mine, and I’m hopeful that I can provide opportunities for others like me. Today, when I see my name, I’m filled with pride.”
