Barrett Doss Instagram – My girl @jaicyelliot came through this week! Redlining and gentrification are both housing crises that are results of the systemic racism and poverty that impacts this country. The benefits historically awarded to middle class white families have been near impossible to overcome for many minorities, and now that it’s become a kind of status symbol to move in to underserved communities- the hard earned cultural and economic independence of these neighborhoods is being threatened. How do you guys relate these two topics? Can you see a connection? Get in here and let’s talk about it!
From Jaicy:
Happy Monday!! Welcome to #19for20!! Today I get to define Redlining and Gentrification for y’all!
Please note that this discussion is rooted in a painfully still accurate American reality. These terms talk of an America where systemic poverty and systemic racism underly and impact every aspect of society.
Redlining has, since it’s use in federal government, been a tool of segregation and continued control of white people over Latinos, African Americans and other minorities.
Gentrification drains the established businesses in urban communities, displaces people and cultures.
